In 2005 he received the death penalty. During his time in prison, Gularte’s mental health continued to deteriorate and he experienced hallucinations. Gularte’s lawyers brought in specialists to diagnose him, so that he could be moved to a psychiatric care facility. The Indonesian government denied diagnosis of the specialists and brought in their own doctors to diagnose Gularte. Results of these tests were never released to Gularte, his defence, or his family.
During the early hours of April 29, 2015, Gularte was executed along with seven other drug criminals on the prison island of Nusakambangan. At the time of his death, Gularte was so unwell he became confused and had to ask, “Am I being executed?”

Gularte life was filled with mental illness. At 16 he was treated for drug addiction. Following this he began to show signs of Bipolar Disorder and Depression.
In 1999, Gularte was arrested in Jakarta airport with two other men. They had 6kg of cocaine hidden in surfboard cases. Gularte claimed the drugs as solely his. Both of his conspirators are free today.
